Backsight
it notices what you can'tYou're bad at statistics about yourself. Everyone is. Backsight closes this gap by turning your notes into stats over time (repetition, distribution, spikes, changes, correlations) and noticing the patterns you'd never catch from the inside. No advice, no coaching.
One email, at launch: nothing else. Never sold, shared, or added to a newsletter.
How it works
- 1
Speak a moment
Voice or text, the moment something happens. No setup, no fields.
- 2
It transcribes on-device
Audio never leaves your device, and it's gone the moment it's text. Offline, private, yours.
- 3
Your notes become stats
An offline dashboard surfaces the patterns over time: repetition, distribution, spikes, changes, correlations. Sample size and uncertainty shown, so you don't over-read them.
Use cases
- Speak the moment it happens, read the patterns later: no re-reading every entry. A month in, you see what actually drains you.
- Mood and energy across a week or month: repetition, spikes, and shifts over the whole span. Turns out it's Wednesday afternoons, every week.
- Your themes correlated against your tone, sample size shown so you don't over-read it. Work tracks 3× the anxiety of anything else. That one's obvious. The patterns you'd never have caught are the point.
- Recurring themes (work, sleep, family, focus) counted over time. You log sleep twice as much as family. Fine or not: now you know.
The blind spot
Every tracker asks you to decide upfront what's worth measuring. That covers the things you already suspect. The pattern that actually runs your weeks is the one you never thought to log.

Privacy & ownership
- On-device transcription. Voice-first notes where the audio's gone the moment it's text: recordings never leave your device, and it works offline.
- End-to-end encrypted sync. Notes move between your own devices, keys only you hold. We can't read them.
- Accountless. No login. Your keys are your identity.
- Unlimited export and import. Raw CSV or JSON, anytime. Never paywalled, never locked in.
- No dark patterns. No streaks, no guilt, no nagging. Reminders off by default.
- A mirror. Quantified self without the verdict: it describes the patterns in your notes (correlations, distributions) and leaves the meaning to you.
Planned for power users
- Run a local MCP server. Point any agent (Claude, a local model, anything) at your own data, on your own machine. We never see it.
Optional, paid. The free dashboard stands on its own.
FAQ
Is my data private?
Yes. Transcription on your device, notes end-to-end encrypted, sync with keys only you hold. We can't read your records.
Do I need an account?
No. Backsight is accountless: your keys are your identity. The only email we ask for is the waitlist, to tell you when it's ready.
Does it tell me what to do?
No. It only describes the patterns, distributions, and correlations in your notes, and leaves the meaning to you.
Can I get my data out?
Always. Raw CSV or JSON, in or out, anytime. Free, never paywalled, no lock-in.
What does it cost?
Recording and the dashboard are free. Encrypted sync and the agent interface are paid add-ons, later.
When does it launch?
In development. Join the waitlist; we'll email you once, at launch.
Is it a voice journal?
Close. Speak or type a moment; it transcribes on-device. A private voice-first notes app where the audio's gone the moment it's text.
Can it show patterns in my notes?
Yes. It shows themes, repetition, distributions, and correlations over time, with sample size so you don't over-read them. It describes; it never diagnoses or advises.
Is this quantified self?
Yes, the private kind. Self-tracking and stats on your own notes, with encrypted sync and no account. We can't read your records.
